The material is a thinner cardboard, so it won’t easily collapse or be crushed, but it does have some flex without the lid. The lid doesn’t fit tightly, so it doesn’t take much effort to remove it. Still, I was comfortable enough with it to place a 4” diameter hand-blown, glass ornament inside on some crinkle cut paper shred filler without too much concern. The color is a matte black, so it looks like painted paper/chalk board. Cost to value is a little high at $13. I have purchased other, better-quality boxes for $8 or less.
