The Limoges box is a small hand painted trinket box, produced in factories in the French city of Limoges. First created in the mid 1700’s, they have been used to hold needles, thimbles and other sewing implements. Later on they were used as snuff boxes, pill boxes, and powder boxes. To-day the Limoges boxes are highly collectible and sought after, and represent all manner of styles and shapes. Each box is individually made and painted by skilled artists, who are able to paint in fine detail. The inscription “Peint Main” found on the boxes is French for hand painted.
